The title is a dead giveaway that something is amiss, but director
Danny Pang keeps the audience guessing to the end in his latest
supernatural suspense In Love with the Dead. Another signature work
from the prolific masters of horror, this Pang Brothers production
pairs two of Hong Kong's brightest young stars, box office favorite
Stephy Tang (Love is Not All Around) and heartthrob Shawn Yue (Infernal
Affairs 2) for their first collaboration since Feel 100% 2003. The
auteurs of atmosphere strike the perfect combination of eerie lighting,
moody music, and austere art design to tell a horrifying, yet heartfelt
story of extreme love. Though still dealing with inner and outer
ghosts, the film's balance of melodrama and macabre is markedly
different from the Pangs' previous works, showing that the brothers are
constantly redefining their arsenal and the genre in the process. In
Love with the Dead's young leads deliver performances that are
genuinely chilling and touching, with Stephy Tang in particular making
a breakthrough in her acting. The film also co-stars newcomer Yoka Yue
and talented child actress Zeng Qiqi from Re-cycle, as well as Patrick
Tam (Beast Cops), television star Raymond Cho, and veteran actress Kiki
Sheung (The Detective).

When Wai (Stephy Tang) is diagnosed with cancer, her loving boyfriend
Ming (Shawn Yue) does everything he can to care for her. Along with
Wai's little sister Ping (Zeng Qiqi), the family of three try to face
the hardships together with brave faces. But as Wai's health slowly
deteriorates, her temperament becomes volatile, her actions odd and
unnerving, reminding Ping of the ghost stories she likes to read.
Bowing to the pressure, Ming takes solace in the company of his
heartbroken co-worker Fong (Yoka Yue), forming a painful triangle for
all involved. One rainy night, Wai disappears briefly and both Ming and
Fong meet accidents. Afterwards, Wai, Fong, and even Ming himself act
increasingly strange. Ming begins to suspect that not everyone returned
home safely that night.

Synopsis:
Ji-won (Kim Ha-neul) is a bright young student with a promising future
ahead of her. Her past however is a different story. Something happened
to her a while ago, and whatever it was, it left Ji-won with a blank
memory. She has no recollection of who she is, her friends or her life
before the incident.

Hard work and lots of exercise - she enjoys swimming - has brought her
back to her current state, almost completely recovered, except for the
fact that she still can’t remember anything.

Ji-won’s plan is to travel abroad to study in the hope that leaving her
familiar surroundings will do her some good, but her mother is against
this decision. Ji-won’s father is dead, and her mother feels abandoned
and alone. She tries to persuade her daughter to stay.

Ji-won begins to remember little things from her past that come to her
in short flashes. At the same time she sees strange things around her:
A little girl hiding in her closet, only to disappear the next moment,
and dark figures looming in the shadows. She suspects that these
scattered images and events are somehow connected to her past.

When one of Ji-won’s old friends Eun-seo (Bin) is found dead, drowned
in her home, she begins to investigate her past. She’s desperate for
any kind of information, but nobody will talk to her. Everybody seems
to blame her for some horrible event.

Ji-won discovers that she was once friends with three other girls:
Eun-seo, Yu-jeong (Jeon Hye-bin ) and Mi-kyeong (Shin-ee). Together
these four girls formed an impenetrable alliance, and then... what?
What happened? What did she do? Why does everybody look at her funny,
and why - for the love of God - can’t she remember anything? Ji-won
digs deeper into her past, hoping to find the answer. But as the old
saying goes: Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it...

Computer scientist Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) finds something extremely important. The Thirteenth Floor is a stylish modern-day noir that raises questions about technology versus reality, all the while wrapped up in a murder-mystery story line.

Not the best "What Is Real" movie, but interesting. If you don't like dark movies or science fiction, then this may not hold your attention. Not as well executed as Matrix, doesn't pose the questions that The Truman Show does about the nature of human existence, not as troubling as Dark City. Still, mostly satisfactory. Unfortunately, the plot twist becomes quite obvious well before the final "Aha" moment. Well enough foreshadowed that anybody who's survived eighth grade may well see it coming. Still, sufficiently satisfying to be worth watching.

If you enjoy this movie, you may also enjoy Jack Chalker's Wonderland Gambit series, starting with The Cybernetic Walrus. While reading that book, I kept thinking of this movie--not that the scenes are similar, but the concepts start out close ...

Five stars for visuals, three stars for making it too obvious where it's going to end, four for the plot.

I love this movie, I always have. Yes, it has dated a little bit, but its one of those few movies that gets better with age. In fact, the dating of the effects adds significance to the visionary horror concept itself, light years ahead of its time. This is Cronenberg's masterpiece and everyone associated with it can consider themselves lucky. Make yourself among these lucky and get this DVD set. I give this movie 4/4!
