Joe Dante) - 5 - Better attempts of second season, yet lacks punch or purpose. 01/01 - Masters of Horror - 2x08 - Valerie on the Stairs (dir. Mick Garris) - 5 - Also better than the norm, yet doesn't reach too high. 02/01 - Touch of Death - commentary (dir. Lucio Fulci) - Very earnest and sympathetic man, Fulci, nothing like American directors. 04/01 - Ministry of Fear (dir. Fritz Lang) - 4 - Utterly ordinary movie, nothing classic. 05/01 - a Fistful of Dollars (dir. Sergio Leone) - 7 - True classic in every sense. 05/05 - Alien Resurrection - extended cut (dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet) - 5 - Quite ridiculous, convoluted. 06/06 - One Missed Call (dir. Takashi Miike) - 5 - Disappointing from Miike; well-made but not original or thoughtful. 07/06 - Masters of Horror - 2x09 - Right to Die (dir. Rob Schmidt) - 4 - What foolishness? Who is Schmidt? Could be worse. 08/01 - Golden Eye (dir. Martin Campbell) - 5 - At least still somewhat Bondish and not tired. 11/01 - a Fistful of Dollars - commentary by Frayling - This man is an expert? Among the very WORST commentaries i've cringed through. teriyakidonut 01-14-2007, 03:08 AM I use a 4 star system and first time viewings are in bold.
January 01/01 - Goldeneye **1/2 (One of the lesser bond films) 01/02 - Mona Lisa ***1/2 (Due to a burning error the last 2 minutes were cut off so the film ended unresolved, I liked it that way) 01/03 - Funky Forrest *** (Weird as shit but hard to recommend because at over 2 hours it wears out it's welcome) 01/05 - Dead Man's Shoes **** (A working class revenge film = AWESOME) 01/05 - The Descent *** (Not nearly as effective upon second viewing) 01/06 - Children of Men **** (I loved this movie) 01/08 - The Day of the Beast **1/2 (Kick ass premise, lame execution in the second half) 01/10 - Edmond **1/2 (Brutal and realistic but some stale performances ruined the overall effect) 01/10 - The Addiction ***1/2 (Artsy as fuck but original, stylish and thought provoking) 01/11 - Live and Let Die *** (People gotta stop pissing on Roger Moore. He may be kinda ugly but he plays a damn fine Bond) 01/12 - This Film is Not Yet Rated **1/2 (An important movie but doesn't live up to it's great concept) 01/12 - Casino Royale *** (I like this movie but a Bond film should never take itself so seriously) 01/13 - Fury ***1/2 (Fritz Lang's first American movie is brilliant but suffers from an anti-climatic ending) 01/13 - Cul-de-sac **** (A masterpiece! Should be seen by everybody who loves film) 01/15 - High School ***1/2 (A powerful look at the hypocrisy that plagues the educational system and you can quote me on that) 01/16 - Crank *** (More extreme than Mountain Dew drunk from a rabid dog's mouth) 01/17 - Unfaithfully Yours **** (This movie blew me away! I wouldn't be surprised if I watched it 50 more times) 01/18 - The OH in Ohio 1/2 (Paul Rudd is the man and it was good to see Danny DeVito again but this movie was pretty damn crappy) 01/21 - Letters From Iwo Jima **1/2 (Good enough but nothing special. Should have developed the characters more efficiently in the first half) 01/22 - Dodging the Clock **1/2 (A charming French Canadian movie that's full of life and passion) 01/26 - Smokin Aces * (This was some sub-par shit, I left the theater disappointed and heartbroken) 01/27 - Monday ***1/2 (Sabu is a Genius. His movies are fun, smart, violent, compassionate and funny as hell) 01/29 - Survive Style 5+ ***1/2 (Check this movie out, it's some crazy/colorful shit that doesn't let up!) 02/03 - The Brink's Job ***1/2 (Peter Falk, Warren Oates, Peter Boyle and Gena Rowlands directed by William Friedkin. How could you go wrong?) 02/05 - Snatch *** (I used to give people a hard time for liking this movie but I'm taking it all back. This is a really fun flick!) 02/07 - Steel Helmet ***1/2 (Samuel Fuller sure knew how to make 'em) 02/08 - Shakes the Clown *1/2 (Don't ask me why I watched this one, I just felt like it. Wasn't too bad but surprisingly boring) 02/09 - Pan's Labyrinth **** (What going to the movies is all about! Loved it even more the second time around) 02/10 - The Gunfighter **** (The most heartfelt western I've ever seen. It also features my new favorite Gregory Peck performance) 02/11 - Die You Zombie Bastards! ** (Random, crazy and just plain bizarre but wasn't as consistent as it should have been) 02/11 - Cemetery Without Crosses *** (A beautiful Leone influenced Euro Western) 02/11 - Blast of Silence **** (Where has this movie been all my life? It's lean, mean and goddamned amazing!) 02/16 - Scary Movie 4 ** (It was midnight, I was stoned and this was pretty funny) 02/18 - Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut ***1/2 (The director's cut fixed all my problems with the original and more. Highly recommended!) 02/18 - Face/Off *** (Good times, good times) 02/18 - The Loves of a Blonde ***1/2 (A very fine movie. Unique, funny, realistic and melancholy) 02/19 - The Friends of Eddie Coyle ***1/2 (An unglamorous look at the life of a desperate, aging gangster masterfully played by Robert Mitchum) 02/19 - Black Line *** (Awesome Japanese noir with some killer camera work and an amazing jazz score) 02/19 - Last King of Scotland ** (Forest Whitaker gives a powerhouse performance but overall the movie was really nothing new) 02/20 - Santa Sangre ***1/2 (A bizarre and beautiful look at coming to terms with ones past) 02/20 - Idiocracy **1/2 (A pretty darn good movie. Fox really dropped the ball when deciding not to release this one) 02/23 - The Departed **** (This was my fourth viewing and this movie is still amazing. Will probably end up in my Scorsese top 5) 02/24 - Naked Gun 2 1/2 *** (I'm a sucker for those Zuckers) 02/25 - Dude, Where's My Car? *1/2 (There were a few chuckles but there were way more groans) 02/25 - Christine **** (Damn! It's been a while since I watched this one and it's even better than I remembered) 02/26 - Reno 911: Miami *** (This movie was hilarious! I'd give it a higher rating if the concept wasn't so overdone) 02/27 - Cops Vs. Thugs *** (Stylish, badass and original but confusing as a mother, I blame the subtitles) 03/02 - Zodiac ***1/2 (This flick gets right into your head and stays there. My only complaint is the length, it feels long but it's never boring) 03/03 - Black Snake Moan ***1/2 (Uneven but original, authentic and moving) 03/04 - Fearless Fuzz *1/2 (Goofy Italian crime flick that is just as incomprehensible as it is boring) 03/04 - The Decalogue 1 **** (Amazing performances, heart wrenching story and beautiful camera work) 03/05 - Nights of Cabiria **** (What an amazing movie! Fellini manages to capture all of the bittersweet magic of everyday life) 03/06 - 8 1/2 **** (This Fellini fellow knew how to make a fine film. Not as great as Cabiria or La Dolce Vita but powerful stuff none the less) 03/08 - Days of Glory ** (Run of the mill war flick with an exceptional final battle scene) 03/09 - 300 **1/2 (Definitely lacking in the story department but this movie was too cool to hold that against it) 03/11 - School For Scoundrels 1/2 (This movie was......what's the phrase I'm looking for.......aahhh yes, a steaming turd) 03/16 - Fido ** (Really cool concept but the execution was too predictable for my liking) 03/17 - 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her *** (The least entertaining Godard movie I've seen but still very wise, stylish and brilliantly structured) 03/18 - Underworld U.S.A. ***1/2 (Hard hitting early Sam Fuller noir with a climax that I'll never forget) 03/18 - Revenge of the Nerds ***1/2 (Almost as awesome as a savory slice of hair pie) 03/19 - The Wind That Shakes the Barley *** (Heartbreaking and subtle but the movie was longer than it needed to be) 03/22 - Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? ***1/2 (This is one original, hilarious and charming flick) 03/22 - A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints **1/2 (Very authentic and terrific performances but this is one tired ass storyline) 03/22 - Long Weekend *** (A creepy and well crafted little movie, it's a shame the director didn't go on to bigger things) 03/24 - Kes ***1/2 (Depressing movie about a boy and his pet Eagle. Definitely worth a watch but beware, this ain't My Dog Skip) 03/24 - Safe **** (Masterfully directed by Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore delivers the best performance of the 90's. Watch it now!) 03/25 - Female Trouble ***1/2 (John Water's terrifically nasty little satire on media and fame is a-ok in my books) 03/28 - Stone Cold ** (Lance Henriksen is genuinely great in this fun piece of shit) 03/29 - CSA - The Confederate States of America *1/2 (Interesting concept but would've worked better as a 2 min sketch, not a 90 min movie) 03/29 - Cathy Come Home *** (Unevenly stylized but very effective and absorbing) 03/30 - Fires on the Plain **** (Amazing anti-war film that isn't humorless. If Sam Fuller directed Letters From Iwo Jima this would be the result) 03/30 - The Lookout ** (Cheesy, predictable and not very exciting. Saved by some terrific performance and an original plot) 03/31 - Poor Cow *** (Ken Loach's first theatrical film isn't amazing but you can definitely see him shaping the greatness to come) 04/04 - The Incredibles **** (This is now officially a bonafied classic in my books) 04/04 - Beer League *** (Loads funnier than I expected. Seymour Cassel delivers his most vulgar performance to date) 04/05 - The Bourne Supremacy *** (Delivers the goods but not nearly as intriguing as it thinks it is) 04/06 - Grindhouse **** (I came, I saw and I came again, right in my pants) 04/07 - Violent Naples ** (A decent Italian crime movie that sadly lacks in the originality department) 04/08 - The Big Gundown ***1/2 (Lee Van Cleef shines in this stylish and fun spaghetti western. Morricone's score also kicks all kinds of ass)
